Fire causes extensive damage to Mendenhall Valley area residence

Intentional cause not ruled out, according to fire marshal.

This is a developing story.

A Mendenhall Valley area residence was badly damaged following a Monday evening fire.

Three people and a dog made it out of the home in the 3400 block of Meander Way unharmed, according to Capital City Fire/ Rescue Fire Marshal Dan Jager, but a cat that was inside of the building at the time of the fire was unaccounted for immediately after the fire was extinguished.

Jager said the cause of the fire is being investigated, and an intentional cause had not been ruled out.

The bulk of the fire occurred on the exterior of the building with firefighters encountering thick smoke and visible flames upon arriving at the blaze, Jager said, which was called into CCFR at about 8:11 p.m. Smoke from the fire was visible from several blocks away and lingered in the residential road’s air afterward.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly, Jager said, but the building suffered “extensive” fire and smoke damage.

He said more information about the fire would be forthcoming.
