Juneau police chief finalist drops out

Joshua Kingsbury of New Mexico cites personal reasons for the decision.

This story has been updated to correct that Lt. Krag Campbell has been with the department since 2002, not 2022.

One of the three finalists vying for the Juneau Police Department’s top spot withdrew from consideration Sunday morning citing personal reasons, according to city officials.

On Monday, the city announced police chief candidate Joshua Kingsbury of New Mexico rescinded his candidacy just days before he was expected in Juneau to host a town hall. According to CBJ Human Resources and Risk Management Director Dallas Hargrave, the city will not be adding a replacement candidate.

“At this point it’s just Krag and Derek,” he said Monday afternoon.

The other two finalists, Krag Campbell of Juneau and Derek Bos of Colorado are expected to still hold their town hall meetings Tuesday and Thursday of this week, respectively.

Campbell is already with JPD, currently serving as a lieutenant and spokesperson, and has been an officer in Juneau since 2002. He is originally from Ketchikan.

According to information provided by CBJ, Bos currently serves as chief of police in the Eagle Police Department in Eagle, Colorado. He’s held the position since December of 2022. Prior to then, Bos held the position of chief of police for the Brush Police Department in Brush, Colorado, for four years. He also held multiple positions with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office in Chaffee, Colorado.

During his time in Brush, Bos was involved in a controversial and criticized arrest and prosecution of two school district administrators, charged with multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to reporting from the Colorado Sun.
