Mendenhall Towers fire causes about $100,000 damage, one person hospitalized for smoke inhalation

CCFR: Fire early Sunday morning limited to one apartment, cause remains under investigation

A fire at the Mendenhall Towers apartment building early Sunday morning caused about $100,000 of damage and resulted in one person being hospitalized for smoke inhalation, according to Capital City Fire/Rescue.

The fire occurred in an apartment on the second floor of the downtown building on 4th Street, according to a statement posted on CCFR’s Facebook page at 4:03 a.m. The statement noted the sprinkler system was activated, but the initial fire crew on scene extinguished the blaze.

“There were lots of smoke in the (second) floor,” the statement noted. “No fire extended outside the apartment and smoke confined to the (second) floor.”

The cause remains under investigation, according to CCFR. The local American Red Cross office was notified to help out any displaced occupants.

“With the fire and mostly water damage on the (second) floor and below, estimated $100,000 for damages,” CCFR reported.

A fire in 2018 in the building that originated in a third-floor apartment damaged about 25 units, much of it caused by water fighting the fire, although no injuries were reported.
