{"id":10196,"date":"2016-01-29T09:03:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T17:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/special-election-announced-to-recall-north-slope-mayor\/"},"modified":"2016-01-29T09:03:37","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T17:03:37","slug":"special-election-announced-to-recall-north-slope-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/special-election-announced-to-recall-north-slope-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Special election announced to recall North Slope mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANCHORAGE \u2014<\/strong> North Slope officials have called for a special election to recall Mayor Charlotte Brower after residents successfully gathered enough signatures on a petition.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made Tuesday at a North Slope Borough Assembly meeting, KTVA-TV reports.<\/p>\n<p>The effort to recall Brower began after allegations that she misused borough funds. She has been accused of using public money to send her grandchildren to a basketball camp in California and to purchase cakes for her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Petitioners starting gathering signatures in November and have collected more than the 492 signatures needed for the recall. Under borough laws, a petition to recall an official must gather at least 25 percent of the total number of votes cast in the last election before it can be certified by the clerk.<\/p>\n<p>According to the borough clerk\u2019s office, the special election will be held April 5.<\/p>\n<p>Bower said in a statement that she is looking forward to discussions with the community on the important issues facing the borough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy administration\u2019s record speaks for itself and I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years,\u201d she said in the statement. \u201cThe Borough has never been stronger financially and we will continue to focus on putting people first by bettering the lives of the residents who we are privileged to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE \u2014 North Slope officials have called for a special election to recall Mayor Charlotte Brower after residents successfully gathered enough signatures on a petition.
