Alaska Communications is asking Alaskans to nominate youth heroes for its annual Summer of Heroes scholarship program.

The program each year recognizes five young Alaskans who are “making noteworthy contributions” to their communities. Each selectee receives a $1,500 scholarship through the UA College Savings Plan. Alaska Communications has also pledged to donate $25 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Alaska for every new internet customer who signs up through July 20.

Last year’s award winners came from Toksook Bay, Ketchikan and Anchorage.

This is the eighth year of the program, and since 2011, Alaska Communications has given $105,000 to Alaska’s Boys & Girls Clubs through the effort.

“Youth in our communities around the state are doing truly outstanding work to improve the lives around them,” said Anand Vadapalli, Alaska Communications president and CEO, in a prepared statement. “It’s an honor to recognize them for their work and partner with Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska to support youth development and education throughout Alaska.”
