{"id":12813,"date":"2016-09-07T08:01:22","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T15:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/planetarium-hosts-september-events\/"},"modified":"2016-09-07T08:01:22","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T15:01:22","slug":"planetarium-hosts-september-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/life\/planetarium-hosts-september-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Planetarium hosts September events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>JUNEAU \u2014<\/strong> The Friends of the Marie Drake Planetarium are having a garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. \u2014 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This fundraiser will be held at the Marie Drake Planetarium which is located at 1415 Glacier Avenue, between Harborview and the playing field.<\/p>\n<p>This event benefits the planetarium\u2019s fund for a new digital projector and the Alzheimer\u2019s Association. There will be free astronomy activities for children and Alzheimer\u2019s educational handouts.<\/p>\n<p>Board president Cristina Della Rosa will be available to answer general Alzheimer\u2019s questions.<\/p>\n<p>The existing projector is more than 50 years old. The planetarium has been run by volunteers for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>Donations gratefully accepted at the planetarium on Friday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Do not donate clothes.<\/p>\n<p>People who donate will also get chance to buy things before everyone else, including several telescopes. Donations may also be made at the Sept. 6 show.<\/p>\n<p>There will be two free September shows.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 20, the show will be \u201cA Place for Life Beyond Earth?\u201d about our neighbor, Proxima Centauri.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation starts at 7 p.m. and will be given by board members who teach astronomy at UAS (Steve Kocsis and Rosemary Walling).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Stars Tonight\u2019 will also be presented showing Juneau Night Sky on the analog projector.<\/p>\n<p>Visit their website at www.mariedrakelanetarium.org to learn more and to sign up for email.
