Ed Mercer, currently in the No. 2 spot as Deputy Chief for the Juneau Police Department, has been named the department\u2019s next Police Chief, City and Borough of Juneau spokeswoman Lisa Phu said in a press release Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThroughout my years of police service, I have been preparing to take on such a position and look forward to the new challenge,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cI am very proud of this police department, the police officers and staff. I will continue to provide the best police service to the public as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mercer will move into the top position when Police Chief Bryce Johnson leaves JPD on July 28 for a position in Idaho. Johnson became Juneau\u2019s Chief of Police in June 2013.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are sad to see Chief Johnson go, but I am confident Deputy Chief Mercer will continue to lead the department forward. He has an excellent skill set and has been laying a strong foundation for success throughout his career,\u201d City Manager Rorie Watt said.<\/p>\n
Mercer\u2019s law enforcement career includes 17 years with the Juneau Police Department. He has worked his way through the ranks and has been serving as Deputy Chief of Police since June 2013.
