{"id":14323,"date":"2016-11-20T09:02:11","date_gmt":"2016-11-20T17:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/sealaska-sponsors-lecture-of-code-talkers\/"},"modified":"2016-11-20T09:02:11","modified_gmt":"2016-11-20T17:02:11","slug":"sealaska-sponsors-lecture-of-code-talkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/sealaska-sponsors-lecture-of-code-talkers\/","title":{"rendered":"Sealaska sponsors lecture of code talkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sealaska Heritage Institute and Sealaska will sponsor two free lectures on Tlingit and Navajo code talkers this week in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the at the Walter Soboleff Building, the lectures will feature Southeast Alaska Native Veterans Commander Ozzie Sheakley and Judith Avila, author of the best-selling book \u201cCode Talker: The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheakley will talk about Tlingit code talkers Mark Jacobs, Jr., Harvey Jacobs, George Lewis, Jr., Robert \u201cJeff\u201d David, Sr., and Richard Bean, Sr., and their Congressional Gold and Silver Medals.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/juneauempire.com\/state\/2013-11-21\/tlingit-code-talkers-honored-congressional-silver-medals#1\" target=\"_blank\">Tlingit code talkers honored with Congressional Silver Medals<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Avila will provide the context of the work of code talkers through her lecture \u201cCode Talker \u2014 Looking through the Eyes of Navajo Marine Chester Nez (1921\u20132014).\u201d She will be accompanied by Chester Nez\u2019s grandson, Latham Nez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the war, the Japanese had cracked every code the United States used,\u201d said SHI president Rosita Worl, \u201cbut when the Marines turned to Navajo, Tlingit and other Native American recruits to develop and implement a secret military language, they created the only unbroken codes in modern warfare \u2014 and helped assure victory for the United States over Japan in the South Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sealaska Heritage Institute and Sealaska will sponsor two free lectures on Tlingit and Navajo code talkers this week in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
