On Sept. 15, 1986, the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities for Southeast declared the start of construction for the Pioneers\u2019 Home between the Old Glacier Highway and Egan Drive as soon as next month. The project was to be led by Dawson Construction Co. of Seattle at a price of $6.744 million, $56,000 less than previously estimated. The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly\u2019s land committee was also asked to review an Alaska Municipal League resolution regarding Native-sought changes on a land settlement.<\/p>\n
President Ronald Reagan announced his war against drugs, hoping to curb drug abuse in the U.S. On a local level, the Juneau School Board had created a committee to decrease drug use in the school district by 25 percent. One of the committee\u2019s drug policies that passed included a series of eight one-hour educational sessions be watched by students caught with drugs. Other programs listed involved a \u201cJust Say No\u201d anti-drug campaign, an educational packet to be spread to parents and students, the Safe Home Program which provided drug-free hangout locations, and information on a private alcohol and drug treatment center called Milam Recovery Center.<\/p>\n
