{"id":15131,"date":"2016-12-14T09:02:55","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T17:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/firefighters-extinguish-blaze-at-ketchikan-home\/"},"modified":"2016-12-14T09:02:55","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T17:02:55","slug":"firefighters-extinguish-blaze-at-ketchikan-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/firefighters-extinguish-blaze-at-ketchikan-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefighters extinguish blaze at Ketchikan home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KETCHIKAN \u2014<\/strong> Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that caused significant fire and smoke damage to a Ketchikan home.<\/p>\n<p>The Ketchikan Daily News reported that firefighters from the North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department, the City of Ketchikan and South Tongass knocked down the fire on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>North Tongass Fire Chief Jerry Kiffer said no one was injured in the blaze and the top floor of the two-story building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we knocked (the fire) down a bit we made entry through the front door, put the fire out in the living room and then had to pull the ceilings in the living room to get to the fire that was in the attic,\u201d Kiffer said.<\/p>\n<p>Kiffer said it is unclear which floor of the building the fire started on or why a large amount of smoke was flowing from the main section of the home to the garage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t very obvious how (it was) getting to the garage itself,\u201d Kiffer said. \u201cWe pulled the ceilings down in the garage. There wasn\u2019t any fire, just a lot of heavy smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Downstairs renter David Schwehm said he and another roommate cleared the house and called 911 after hearing suspicious noises upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank God I hadn\u2019t been asleep,\u201d Schwehm said. \u201cI went to lay down, heard a crackling noise and came out and saw flames or sparks by the chimney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The house suffered significant fire and smoke damage to the top floor and water damage to the bottom floor.<\/p>\n<p>Kiffer said the fire was reported as a chimney fire, but the exact cause is under investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KETCHIKAN \u2014 Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that caused significant fire and smoke damage to a Ketchikan home.
