{"id":15700,"date":"2018-07-10T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T05:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/alaska-dot-plans-changes-to-valley-intersection-2\/"},"modified":"2018-07-10T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T05:40:00","slug":"alaska-dot-plans-changes-to-valley-intersection-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/alaska-dot-plans-changes-to-valley-intersection-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Alaska DOT plans changes to Valley intersection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will host an open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday night to hear from members of the public about <a href=\"http:\/\/juneauempire.com\/local\/news\/2018-06-18\/valley-intersection-may-get-redesign\" target=\"_blank\">plans to fix traffic congestion at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Stephen Richards Memorial Drive in the Mendenhall <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/juneauempire.com\/local\/news\/2018-06-18\/valley-intersection-may-get-redesign\" target=\"_blank\">Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The open house is scheduled to take place at the Mendenhall Valley Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>According to DOT, changes are needed at the intersection because peak rush-hour delays are about two and a half times as long as the state&rsquo;s goal for an intersection.<\/p>\n<p>(The average vehicle waits for 89 seconds during morning and evening rush hours at the intersection. The goal is no more than 35 seconds.)<\/p>\n<p>By 2040, according to DOT projections, that wait will be even longer unless DOT makes changes.<\/p>\n<p>DOT is considering <a href=\"http:\/\/dot.alaska.gov\/sereg\/projects\/jnu_riverside_stephen_richards\/assets\/20180625_Concept-Boards.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">eight options for the intersection<\/a>, including leaving it as-is. Alternatives include a roundabout, stoplight, adding turn lanes, or making it a two-way stop.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Highway Administration would pay 91 percent of the cost of any changes; the City and Borough of Juneau would pick up the remaining 9 percent.
