On Sept. 29, 1986, candidates for City and Borough of Juneau Assembly talked about their ideas in an open forum sponsored by the Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce. Although disagreement arose from issues like economic development, all candidates agreed on the feasibility of a proposed road to Haines but noted Juneau\u2019s lack of funds to support the project.<\/p>\n
Statewide, gubernatorial candidate Sen. Arliss Sturgulewski issued a statement on moving the state capital\u2019s location. In a five-point platform released after democratic candidate Steve Cowper announced his own distaste for the move, Sturgulewski claimed she would veto any capital move bill placed on the ballot, oppose all legislative special sessions taking place outside of Juneau and stop the transfer of Juneau jobs to outside cities.<\/p>\n
The Juneau-Douglas High School women\u2019s cross country team won the Southeast Regional competition, which would bring them to the statewide competition in the upcoming week.<\/p>\n
