{"id":18168,"date":"2016-01-25T09:01:20","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T17:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/noise-could-limit-future-fairbanks-gun-ranges\/"},"modified":"2016-01-25T09:01:20","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T17:01:20","slug":"noise-could-limit-future-fairbanks-gun-ranges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/noise-could-limit-future-fairbanks-gun-ranges\/","title":{"rendered":"Noise could limit future Fairbanks gun ranges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FAIRBANKS \u2014<\/strong> Noise concerns may lead Fairbanks to set rules for future gun ranges near neighborhoods in the city\u2019s general use and industrial zones.<\/p>\n<p>The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly may require a public hearing and conditional use permit for prospective operators, similar to rules for gun ranges in commercial zones, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.<\/p>\n<p>Residents complained about safety and noise last summer when a firearms training school opened in their neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Gun ranges are prohibited in residential zones. Gun ranges that have been allowed to open in general use and industrial zones would have grandfather rights.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblywoman Diane Hutchison is the measure\u2019s primary sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is a noise issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The measure includes National Rifle Association safety standards. Gun ranges would need a 15-foot backstop, shooting lanes at least a half-mile from neighboring dwellings, and 8-foot side berms.<\/p>\n<p>Shotgun-only shooting ranges would not be required to have berms or backstop.<\/p>\n<p>The planning commission held a public hearing on the measure in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy restrictive zoning, thus making it more difficult to provide range facilities, the community at large will become less safe,\u201d said Laura Berkowitz.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who had opposed the firearms training school said the measure was a positive change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ordinance will allow for nearby residents to be notified and have their concerns heard before any new ranges are built,\u201d Lisa Vaughn said.<\/p>\n<p>A vote is set for Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRBANKS \u2014 Noise concerns may lead Fairbanks to set rules for future gun ranges near neighborhoods in the city\u2019s general use and industrial zones.
