MARKSVILLE, La. <\/strong>\u2014 A grand jury in Louisiana indicted two deputy city marshals on second-degree murder charges Thursday in the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old autistic boy last month while he was strapped into the front seat of his father\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n

The indictment handed up by an Avoyelles Parish grand jury charged Derrick Stafford, 32, and Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, with one count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.<\/p>\n

Police say Stafford, a full-time police lieutenant, and Greenhouse, a former police officer, were moonlighting as deputy city marshals in Marksville on the night of Nov. 3 when they fired at least 18 rounds at a car driven by Chris Few. The shooting severely wounded Few and killed his son, Jeremy Mardis.<\/p>\n

Stafford and Greenhouse were arrested on second-degree murder charges last month but not formally charged until Thursday.<\/p>\n

Attorney General James D. \u201cBuddy\u201d Caldwell vowed Thursday to \u201ccontinue (a) detailed and thorough investigation as we prepare for trial.\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy\u2019s grandmother wept as state judge William Bennett read the indictment aloud in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t get Jeremy back, but we got what we wanted today,\u201d Cathy Mardis said.<\/p>\n

Earlier, she spoke to the media outside the courthouse, calling for the release of the body camera footage of the shooting and describing the pain the shooting had inflicted on the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been pure hell. I can\u2019t explain what it\u2019s like to bury your 6-year-old grandchild,\u201d said Mardis, 46, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.<\/p>\n

Bennett lifted a gag order on people involved in the case but prosecutors declined to disclose any additional details about the incident or describe what the video depicts.<\/p>\n

Defense attorneys said prosecutors haven\u2019t turned over any evidence for them to review yet.<\/p>\n

George Higgins III, an attorney for Greenhouse, said, \u201cWe\u2019ve yet to see any evidence for ourselves. I just know there\u2019s a lot more to this story than what has been talked about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jonathan Goins, a lawyer for Stafford, declined to describe his client\u2019s account of the incident, but said evidence will show he \u201cacted in a very lawful way.\u201d<\/p>\n

State Police Col. Mike Edmonson cited the video when he announced the arrest of the two officers, calling it the most disturbing thing he\u2019s seen. But he gave no indication of what\u2019s on the video.<\/p>\n

Last month, an attorney for Few told The Associated Press that video from another officer\u2019s body camera showed Few had his hands up inside the vehicle and didn\u2019t pose a threat when the officers opened fire. The judge hearing the case then swiftly imposed a gag order, keeping those involved from speaking to the media.<\/p>\n

Cathy Mardis said she has not seen the tape and can only imagine what is on there but added: \u201cI thank God the tape is there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want justice for Jeremy. I want justice for Chris,\u201d she said. She said the family had an open casket funeral for her grandson even though there were signs of trauma on his body.<\/p>\n

She quoted the funeral director as saying, \u201cDon\u2019t touch his head. It might fall back apart.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grandmother wore a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-shirt, in honor of her grandson who loved the characters. Standing by her side outside the courthouse was Samantha Few, the mother of Chris Few.<\/p>\n

Cathy Mardis spoke lovingly of her grandson. He was autistic and non-verbal but very bright, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the most loving child you could have met. He was always smiling and happy. He taught himself to read at three years old just from watching YouTube,\u201d she said. Jeremy Mardis has a younger sister who still cannot understand what happened, the grandmother said.<\/p>\n
