The city has filled its newly created chief housing officer position.

Effective March 29, Scott Ciambor, a planner with the Alaska Mental Health Board and Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, will be Juneau’s first CHO, a director-level position based in the city manager’s office.

Ciambor will be tasked with “facilitating housing development within the community” and “coordinating with government agencies to help bring projects to fruition,” among other things, according to a city press release.

“I am pleased that we’ve been able to attract someone of Scott’s caliber to be the city’s first chief housing officer,” City Manager Kim Kiefer said in the release. “The availability of housing is fundamental to the economic growth of our community and the wellbeing of our citizens. We need a wider variety of housing that is affordable for our workforce, our growing senior population, and others who are priced out of the existing market. Scott has the skills to help us move forward.”

Ciambor lives in Juneau and serves as board chair for the Alaska Coalition on Housing and Homelessness, and he was the Juneau Economic Development Council’s affordable housing coordinator, according to the release.

“I am very excited about stepping into this vitally important position,” Ciambor said in the release. “I look forward to working with the CBJ and its community partners to help develop the full spectrum of housing that is needed in our community. This is a great opportunity to put into place an array of tools that will provide the framework for local housing policy in the future.”
