Local jewelry designer Carol White of Full Cup Studios will be showing her latest designs. Carol creates beautiful, textured pieces featuring mixed metals, including copper, silver, and brass. She donates 10 percent of her sales to the Taylor White Foundation, which works to give young people the tools they need to make good decisions.<\/p>\n

The Alaska State Library is celebrating Alaska Book Week by hosting local author Sarah Isto, who will read from her upcoming memoir in verse, talk about her childhood in Fairbanks, and invite the audience to share what being Alaskan means to them during October First Friday at the Andrew P. Kashevaroff building. The reading will begin at 5 p.m, in the APK Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n

Isto is the author of \u201cGood Company: A Mining Family in Fairbanks, Alaska\u201d and \u201cThe Fur Farms of Alaska: Two Centuries of History and a Forgotten Stampede.\u201d She exhibited her poetry, penned in calligraphy and illustrated by her husband, Gordon Harrison, at KTOO\u2019s broadsides exhibit in May and in a show at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center in November 2014.<\/p>\n

The First Friday reception will be sponsored by the Friends of the State Library, Archives, and Museum. The Museum will be open free of charge from 4:30-7 p.m.<\/p>\n

Alaska Book Week is an annual celebration of Alaskan authors and their books organized by 49 Writers. For more information, visit http:\/\/www.alaskabookweek.com\/p\/about.html.<\/p>\n

After the First Friday festivities, Mark Whitman and Eve Dillingham will perform \u201cNellie Cashman: A Northern Light,\u201d at the Alaska State Museum beginning at 7 p.m. The event is free but seating is limited so tickets are available in advance at the museum. Limit two tickets per person at pickup.<\/p>\n

The performance will be repeated on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

Juneau\u2019s Empty Chair Project committee has released the book \u201cQuiet Defiance: Alaska\u2019s Empty Chair Story,\u201d by the project\u2019s co-founder, author Karleen Grummett. The book gives a history of Juneau\u2019s Japanese-American community, their incarceration during World War II, and shows Juneau\u2019s support for their Japanese friends and neighbors during and following the war. It also features personal biographies and artifacts shown during the Juneau-Douglas City Museum\u2019s 2014 exhibit, and as an homage to Juneau and the former City Caf\u00e9, it provides the backstory of how Juneau rallied to build the Empty Chair Memorial.<\/p>\n

Please join the Empty Chair committee\u2019s celebration for completion of their final project and receive a complimentary copy of Quiet Defiance: Alaska\u2019s Empty Chair Story, while supplies last, at an open house and book signing either at the valley branch of the Juneau Public Library on First Friday, Oct. 7 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. or downtown at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10:30 a.m. \u2014 noon. The complimentary copies are made possible through the Empty Chair Project and its matching grant from the National Park Service.<\/p>\n

Sealaska Heritage will feature two artists at the Walter Soboleff Building for First Friday. Tsimshian artist Lindarae Shearer will be visiting from Metlakatla with an array of her abalone and silver jewelry, cedar bark baskets, and skin care products made with devil\u2019s club and other local ingredients. Shearer runs a shop in Metlakatla called the Laughing Berry. Also on Friday, Tlingit and Haida artist Della Cheney of Kake will be demonstrating traditional weaving. Be sure to check out the store for new inventory from the Chilton family, Jennifer Younger, and Preston Singletary.<\/p>\n
