The Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum have announced the eight recipients of the 2016 Governor\u2019s Awards for the Arts and Humanities. The list includes three Juneau residents: Nancy DeCherney, executive director of the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, honored with a Governor\u2019s Award for the Arts for arts advocacy; Vicki Soboleff, founder and leader of the dance group Ldak\u00e1t Naax Sat\u00ed Y\u00e1tx\u2019i (All Nations Children), honored with the Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Languages; and Steve Henrikson, curator of collections at the Alaska State Museum, honored with a Governor\u2019s Award for the Humanities. The awards ceremony will take place Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.<\/p>\n

The Governor\u2019s Awards, bestowed once a year, honor a select few Alaska citizens and organizations that \u201cexemplify great art and devotion to the humanities\u201d and \u201cenrich the culture of the state,\u201d according to a release. The awards are co-presented by the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum in coordination with the Office of the Governor.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Lifetime Achievement Award: June Rogers, Fairbanks<\/p>\n

\u2022 Individual Artist Award: Pat Garley, Palmer<\/p>\n

\u2022 Arts Advocacy Award: Nancy DeCherney, Juneau<\/p>\n

\u2022 Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Languages: Vicki Soboleff, Juneau<\/p>\n

Governor\u2019s Awards for the Humanities<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Cyrano\u2019s Theatre Company, Anchorage<\/p>\n

\u2022 Steve Henrikson, Alaska State Museum Curator of Collections, Juneau<\/p>\n

\u2022 Lucy \u201cAhvaiyak\u201d Richards, I\u00f1upiaq Language Instructor, Barrow<\/p>\n

Alaska Studies Educator of the Year:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Marc Swanson, Kenai Mountains-Turnagain Arm National Heritage Area Curriculum Developer, Seward<\/p>\n
