SHI to sponsor lecture on Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights<\/p>\n
Sealaska Heritage Institute is sponsoring a lecture by visiting scholar, Jacob Adams, from Norway who is researching indigenous intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n
In his talk, \u201cIndigenous Issues in Native Handicrafts and Intellectual Property,\u201d Adams\u2014a Ph.D. student in law who serves on the law faculty at the University of Troms\u00f8 in Norway\u2014will introduce his work in the area of indigenous intellectual property rights. Through his research, Adams, who is also a practicing attorney with law degrees from universities in Australia and the United States, is examining alternative means to protect indigenous intellectual property using trademark law, with a focus on Northwest Coast culture and art.<\/p>\n
The institute is particularly interested in Adams\u2019 research, as the protection of ownership of Tlingit clan property or at.\u00f3owu\u2014including crests, names, songs, stories\u2014has been an ongoing, major concern for years, said SHI President Rosita Worl.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore often we have been told that our clan crests have been in the public domain for decades and that ownership protections do not exist,\u201d Worl said.<\/p>\n
Adams has been in the institute\u2019s Visiting Scholar Program since January and will conduct research at Sealaska Heritage through April 2016. He will give a second lecture on his preliminary findings upon completion of his field research.<\/p>\n
SHI sponsors a Visiting Scholar Program for graduate students enrolled into an accredited educational institution or professors engaged in research that advances knowledge of Tlingit, Haida or Tsimshian culture, language, arts or history. The lecture is scheduled from noon-1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Living History Center at the Walter Soboleff Building in Juneau.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
