{"id":21949,"date":"2016-11-22T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T17:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/group-sues-over-lack-of-info-in-alaska-railroad-lng-project\/"},"modified":"2016-11-22T09:00:25","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T17:00:25","slug":"group-sues-over-lack-of-info-in-alaska-railroad-lng-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/group-sues-over-lack-of-info-in-alaska-railroad-lng-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Group sues over lack of info in Alaska Railroad LNG project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANCHORAGE<\/strong> \u2014 An environmental group filed a lawsuit Monday against the Federal Railroad Administration for failing to disclose the approval process for the Alaska Railroad\u2019s application for rail shipments of highly volatile liquefied natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>The Alaska Railroad would make the nation\u2019s first rail shipments of LNG.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Biological Diversity filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. on Monday. Miyoko Sakashita, a senior attorney for the organization, said the federal agency has largely ignored a February public records request seeking information about the hazards of carrying LNG, other than acknowledging the request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought the urgent action was needed,\u201d she said of the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really concerned that there hasn\u2019t been an adequate safety and environmental review,\u201d Sakashita told The Associated Press, adding that the lack of transparency \u201cdoes not make me confident in their safety and environmental protections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal Railroad Administration spokeswoman Tiffany Lindemann said the agency does not comment on pending or potential litigation.<\/p>\n<p>The agency in October 2015 issued a two-year permit authorizing three round-trip trains between Anchorage and Fairbanks per week. The Alaska Railroad in September sent 40-foot LNG containers between the two cities as a demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>A railroad spokesman did not immediately provide information about the project Monday, including the current status of the LNG train runs.<\/p>\n<p>In September, railroad officials said the plan was to take information about efficiencies and logistics from the350-mile demonstration runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks before making decisions about their feasibility as a business.<\/p>\n<p>Expansion of natural gas use is a longtime hope of Fairbanks residents looking for cheaper alternative to fuel oil for heating homes.<\/p>\n<p>Natural gas also is part of a state plan to reduce some of the nation\u2019s worst winter air pollution.
