NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Adele\u2019s new album \u201c25\u201d has sold more than 2.3 million copies in the United States alone during its first three days on the market, a stunning number for a music industry that has seen sales steadily fall in the digital era.<\/p>\n
To put that into perspective, only Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201c1989,\u201d (released late last year) Drake\u2019s \u201cIf You\u2019re Reading This It\u2019s Too Late\u201d (released in April) and Ed Sheeran\u2019s \u201cx\u2019\u2019 (in June 2014) have sold as much as one million copies all year so far. Adele\u2019s disc went on sale Friday.<\/p>\n
Nielsen Music said Monday that Adele will almost certainly break the one-week record for album sales, set by \u2018NSYNC in 2000 with 2.4 million for \u201cNo Strings Attached.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere isn\u2019t anybody that I\u2019ve talked to in the music business who hasn\u2019t been astonished by these numbers,\u201d said Dave Bakula, senior vice president for industry insights at Nielsen.<\/p>\n
Adele\u2019s previous album, 2011\u2019s \u201c21,\u201d has sold 11.24 million copies in the United States; it\u2019s likely many of the people who sought out the new one this weekend haven\u2019t bought an album since. Adele also did not allow streaming services like Spotify to make \u201c25\u201d available, so people anxious to hear it had to buy it.<\/p>\n
She performed the first single \u201cHello\u201d on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d this past weekend. That track alone has sold 2.5 million copies in the four weeks it has been on the market.<\/p>\n
The initial sales are a boost for an industry that has drastically changed over the past decade. In contrast to the four albums that have topped one million in sales this year, there were 88 such discs in 2000, the year \u2018N Sync had its big opening, Nielsen said (Sales records date to 1991, when then-SoundScan started keeping track of first-week sales).<\/p>\n
Adele is also leaving Swift in the dust. Her \u201c1989\u201d sold 1.3 million its first week on sale last year, the fastest seller in some time, and Bakula said Adele\u2019s disc is likely to finish the week with more than twice that number sold.<\/p>\n
The British singer taped a concert special at New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall last week that is scheduled to air on Dec. 14 at 10 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n
Before she performed on \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d a skit on the show spoke to her wide-ranging popularity. In the skit, a family was squabbling over politics at a Thanksgiving Day dinner, but when a girl put \u201cHello\u201d on the stereo, everyone stopped arguing to sing along.<\/p>\n
