The<\/span> playground<\/span> at<\/span> Twin<\/span> Lakes<\/span> went<\/span> up<\/span> in<\/span> flames<\/span> Monday<\/span> evening<\/span> just<\/span> before<\/span> 6<\/span> p.m.,<\/span> and<\/span> Capital<\/span> City<\/span> Fire\/Rescue<\/span> firefighters<\/span> believe<\/span> it<\/span> was<\/span> an<\/span> act<\/span> of<\/span> arson.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Assistant<\/span> Fire<\/span> Chief<\/span> Ed<\/span> Quinto<\/span> said<\/span> CCFR<\/span> is<\/span> treating<\/span> the<\/span> fire<\/span> investigation<\/span> under<\/span> the<\/span> assumption<\/span> that<\/span> it<\/span> was<\/span> intentionally<\/span> set.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Witness<\/span> reports<\/span> said<\/span> the<\/span> fire<\/span> spread<\/span> quickly<\/span> and<\/span> then<\/span> completely<\/span> engulfed<\/span> the<\/span> playground<\/span> in<\/span> a<\/span> matter<\/span> of<\/span> minutes.<\/span> Area<\/span> resident<\/span> Marina<\/span> Lindsey<\/span> was<\/span> among<\/span> those<\/span> who<\/span> saw<\/span> the<\/span> fire<\/span> when<\/span> it<\/span> first<\/span> began,<\/span> and<\/span> she<\/span> said<\/span> it<\/span> was<\/span> \u201cvery<\/span> small\u201d<\/span> when<\/span> she<\/span> saw<\/span> it<\/span> and<\/span> that<\/span> it<\/span> started<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> boat<\/span> structure.<\/span> She<\/span> said<\/span> she<\/span> saw<\/span> several<\/span> children<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> playground<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> time,<\/span> but<\/span> wasn\u2019t<\/span> sure<\/span> if<\/span> they<\/span> had<\/span> any<\/span> involvement.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Throngs<\/span> of<\/span> spectators<\/span> crowded<\/span> around<\/span> the<\/span> playground<\/span> Monday<\/span> evening,<\/span> as<\/span> firefighters<\/span> knocked<\/span> down<\/span> the<\/span> blaze.<\/span> The<\/span> fire<\/span> began<\/span> around<\/span> 5:45<\/span> p.m.<\/span> and<\/span> was<\/span> largely<\/span> extinguished<\/span> by<\/span> 6:30<\/span> p.m.<\/span> The<\/span> fire<\/span> engines<\/span> poured<\/span> water<\/span> over<\/span> the<\/span> playground,<\/span> which<\/span> has<\/span> a<\/span> rubber<\/span> ground<\/span> and<\/span> many<\/span> structures<\/span> that<\/span> are<\/span> made<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> recycled<\/span> materials.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s<\/span> like<\/span> a<\/span> big<\/span> tire<\/span> fire,\u201d<\/span> Quinto<\/span> said<\/span> on<\/span> scene.<\/span> \u201cIt<\/span> will<\/span> be<\/span> burning<\/span> for<\/span> a<\/span> while.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

The<\/span> playground<\/span> appears<\/span> almost<\/span> totally<\/span> destroyed.<\/span> Quinto<\/span> put<\/span> the<\/span> damage<\/span> estimate<\/span> over<\/span> $250,000.<\/span> <\/p>\n

A<\/span> giant<\/span> plume<\/span> of<\/span> smoke<\/span> billowed<\/span> over<\/span> the<\/span> area,<\/span> attracting<\/span> the<\/span> crowd<\/span> of<\/span> local<\/span> residents.<\/span> Many<\/span> were<\/span> emotional,<\/span> and<\/span> one<\/span> woman<\/span> commented<\/span> it\u2019s<\/span> like<\/span> watching<\/span> her<\/span> childhood<\/span> go<\/span> up<\/span> in<\/span> flames.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u201cIt<\/span> is<\/span> so<\/span> sad,\u201d<\/span> Lindsey<\/span> said.<\/span> \u201cIt<\/span> was<\/span> such<\/span> an<\/span> amazing<\/span> project.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

The<\/span> playground<\/span> was<\/span> built<\/span> about<\/span> a<\/span> decade<\/span> ago,<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> community<\/span> project.<\/span> It<\/span> was<\/span> a<\/span> big<\/span> undertaking<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> time,<\/span> and<\/span> volunteers<\/span> raised<\/span> the<\/span> money<\/span> to<\/span> fund<\/span> it.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Vehicle<\/span> traffic<\/span> was<\/span> shut<\/span> down<\/span> on<\/span> Glacier<\/span> Highway<\/span> during<\/span> the<\/span> incident.<\/span> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
