{"id":22379,"date":"2016-03-22T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-22T15:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/damage-estimated-at-3-million-in-emmonak-fire\/"},"modified":"2016-03-22T08:00:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-22T15:00:54","slug":"damage-estimated-at-3-million-in-emmonak-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/damage-estimated-at-3-million-in-emmonak-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Damage estimated at $3 million in Emmonak fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>EMMONAK \u2014 <\/strong>Authorities say a fire that started in a fisheries warehouse in the western Alaska town of Emmonak has destroyed several buildings and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.<\/p>\n<p>No injuries were reported in the blaze that started Saturday and was still burning Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska State Troopers and firefighters had responded to reports of fire and smoke around 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kwik\u2019Pak Fisheries facility. The flames spread quickly to two other Kwik\u2019Pak buildings and another two owned by boat-builder Yukon Marine Manufacturing. All five buildings were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Trooper William Connors said extinguishing the fire was a challenge due to the village\u2019s outdated and faulty fire gear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe gave up after a certain point because all of the equipment was just busted and ineffective,\u201d Connors said. \u201cNone of the equipment was maintained in this village, so we did not have any operational water pumps \u2014 the pump that was on the fire truck in the village was also busted, so when we did get water in the truck and deployed the hose, it was like using a garden hose on the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities planned to let Kwik\u2019Pak officials into the area to sort through the wreckage once the fire burned itself out.<\/p>\n<p>Connors said that both Kwik\u2019Pak and Yukon Marine Manufacturing played a major role in Emmonak, a town of 700 located at the mouth of the Yukon River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re the main business in this region,\u201d Connors said. \u201cThey provide all the employment and livelihood.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EMMONAK \u2014 Authorities say a fire that started in a fisheries warehouse in the western Alaska town of Emmonak has destroyed several buildings and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.
