{"id":22566,"date":"2016-03-13T08:03:07","date_gmt":"2016-03-13T15:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/gold-mill-proposed-for-eastern-kenai-peninsula\/"},"modified":"2016-03-13T08:03:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-13T15:03:07","slug":"gold-mill-proposed-for-eastern-kenai-peninsula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/gold-mill-proposed-for-eastern-kenai-peninsula\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold mill proposed for eastern Kenai Peninsula"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KENAI \u2014<\/strong> The private-owned Diamond Gold Corporation is proposing a gold extraction mill on the eastern Kenai Peninsula expected to add a boost to the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Ellis, the company\u2019s president, said the proposed Sable Crown Gold Mill near Seward would start processing 40 tons of gold-quartz ore per day this summer before reaching full capacity at 100 tons per day, The Peninsula Clarion reported.<\/p>\n<p>The project calls for ore to be supplied by smaller mines near Seward and the Port Wells area of Prince William Sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding alone, the mines are too small to support the infrastructure of a mill,\u201d Ellis said. \u201cHowever, they could sell their ore to a custom mill. Then it becomes very economic for these small mines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellis, who began mining in the 1970s, said he believes the value of gold \u2014 about $1,200 per ounce \u2014 is high enough to make the Sable Crown mill a viable project. He said the mill will be able to acquire ore on its own in addition to buying from the smaller mines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the miners will want to do their own mining because they\u2019re independent, and that\u2019s great,\u201d Ellis said. \u201cWith some of them we\u2019ll go in and lease it, and we\u2019ll work it ourselves. Then I have prospects I found 40 years ago that I know are good, and we\u2019ll be mining those ourselves. Some we\u2019ll lease, some we\u2019ll just purchase the ore delivered to the mill, and some we\u2019ll mine ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project has already attracted interest from Seward-area mine owner, David Moore, who says he plans to lease his Primrose mine to Diamond Gold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, as one of the owners, am interested beyond a doubt,\u201d Moore said of the proposed mill.<\/p>\n<p>Ellis said the mill would be built on private land and operational for 10-15 years. The mill will use a system for processing gold-quartz ore that will have a low environmental impact, he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Diamond Gold\u2019s website, the mill will provide up to 25 jobs with a $2.5 million payroll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still a small operation compared to the giant mines in the Interior of Alaska, but it\u2019s going to be a very good little project,\u201d Ellis said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KENAI \u2014 The private-owned Diamond Gold Corporation is proposing a gold extraction mill on the eastern Kenai Peninsula expected to add a boost to the local economy.
