Lisa Murkowski in the August primary. Alaska\u2019s junior U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, the state\u2019s former attorney general, was elected in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>During that election cycle, there was ample opportunities for confusion as both Sullivans were on the ballot, with the former mayor as a candidate for lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n<p>The former mayor said he was asked by conservative leaders one day before the filing deadline to challenge Murkowski, but told KTUU that he can best serve Alaskans by working on local and statewide issues.<\/p>\n<p>A message left by The Associated Press at a phone number listed in his filing documents wasn\u2019t immediately returned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE \u2014 Alaska won\u2019t have two U.S. senators with the same name.
