{"id":23115,"date":"2016-09-14T03:18:22","date_gmt":"2016-09-14T10:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/hawaii-volcano-offers-view-of-rolling-spattering-lava\/"},"modified":"2016-09-14T03:18:22","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T10:18:22","slug":"hawaii-volcano-offers-view-of-rolling-spattering-lava","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/hawaii-volcano-offers-view-of-rolling-spattering-lava\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii volcano offers view of rolling, spattering lava"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HONOLULU<\/strong> \u2014 The lava lake at the summit of Hawaii\u2019s Kilauea volcano has been rising in recent days, offering visitors a dramatic view of rolling, spattering hot rock.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaiian Volcano Observatory research scientist Don Swanson said Monday scientists don\u2019t know exactly why the lava is this high.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s relatively unusual, though. Lava overflowed onto the crater floor in May of last year, raising the rim that confines the lake by another 30 feet. Before last year, it was last this high in the 1974 and in the late 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Swanson says the lake is particularly colorful to watch at night from the Jaggar Museum at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. \u201cPeople from the museum can see the incandescent lava and watch the spattering that\u2019s taking place along the edge of the lake,\u201d Swanson said.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged people to take a look for themselves. \u201cIt\u2019s really quite pretty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kilauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983. It is one of the world\u2019s most active volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently erupting from two places. One is from the summit\u2019s Halemaumau crater. The other is from the Puu Oo crater in the volcano\u2019s eastern rift.
