{"id":23844,"date":"2015-10-07T19:51:47","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T02:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/hurricane-oho-headed-for-southeast-this-weekend\/"},"modified":"2015-10-07T19:51:47","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T02:51:47","slug":"hurricane-oho-headed-for-southeast-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/hurricane-oho-headed-for-southeast-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Oho headed for Southeast this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Southeast Alaska may be the recipient of a surge of rain this weekend, courtesy of a hurricane now spinning in the Pacific Ocean northeast of Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Oho, 645 miles east-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, is forecast to reach the Juneau area by late Friday or early Saturday, according to forecasts from Accuweather and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.<\/p>\n<p>While it won\u2019t be a hurricane when it arrives \u2014 it\u2019s expected to be what meteorologists call an \u201cextratropical storm\u201d \u2014 it will still carry high winds and significant rain into the region.<\/p>\n<p>According to National Weather Service forecasters in Juneau, the remnants of Oho may be strengthened by a \u201cjet streak\u201d \u2014 the point at which the jet stream reaches its maximum force and provides the most possible energy to deepen a storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConfidence is increasing in a significant wind event,\u201d forecasters wrote Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>According to an analysis posted online by Accuweather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, Oho could bring 3-5 inches of rain to Southeast Alaska over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p>The storm\u2019s track and intensity are expected to vary in the days before it reaches Alaska, and hurricane forecasting more than 72 hours in advance is difficult.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southeast Alaska may be the recipient of a surge of rain this weekend, courtesy of a hurricane now spinning in the Pacific Ocean northeast of Hawaii.
