There were no surprises during Saturday\u2019s Southeast Region V Cross Country Running Championships along the Treadwell Mines Trails at Sandy Beach \u2014 except the ease at which the winners in the four races navigated the floodgates of weather.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I was just realizing that everybody else was going through the same thing,\u201d Thunder Mountain senior Naomi Welling said. \u201cWhen there are conditions like this you can either use it to your advantage or you can let it get to your head.\u201d<\/p>\n
Welling defended her 4A Girls Region V crown with a 19 minute 37.14 second jaunt that included a muddy start and finish in wind and rain and temperatures in the 40\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just tried to keep telling myself that everyone is going through this and just try to be the stronger one,\u201d Welling said. \u201cI was glad that I could get under 20 (minutes) and another fast race in before next weekend\u2019s state championships.\u201d<\/p>\n
Juneau-Douglas senior Ali Arthur topped the 4A boys field with a time of 17:13.06. The JDHS boys and girls teams both finished in first place.<\/p>\n
\u201cStaying warm was the hard part,\u201d Arthur said. \u201cAnd staying in front of my teammates who were pushing me extremely hard. I wanted to open a gap. I tried to do it at the beginning, keep it through the trails and open it up at the end. At the finish I was just thinking \u2018don\u2019t get passed.\u2019 I was extremely tired but I knew I had something left. My mindset was more \u2018if you are not first, you\u2019re last.\u2019 I felt strong knowing that I had my teammates behind me. I know if I don\u2019t push it then someone is right there, and we are all able to win it together.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Juneau boys took the team title.<\/p>\n
Wrangell\u2019s Reyn Hutten took the 1A\/2A\/3A title with a time of 21:13.40.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not like this weather is unheard of being southeast Alaska,\u201d Hutten said. \u201cBut it is hard starting and once you are in the race you don\u2019t feel it anymore, it is just running and your legs and that is all you can feel. I didn\u2019t have anyone to keep pace with so I just tried to go by what I felt in my body and usually it works.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hutton pulled away from the field just over a half mile in and was pursued by the Petersburg\u2019s Kayleigh Eddy, Avery Skeek and Hannah Pfundt, who placed second through fourth, respectively, with Hoonah\u2019s Jordan McLuckie in fifth and Petersburg\u2019s Erin Pfundt in sixth.<\/p>\n
Sitka\u2019s Colin Baciocco defended his 1A\/2A\/3A boys crown with a time of 17:01.26, the fastest pace along the trail during the day.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the weather and just running alone for a lot of the race was the most challenging,\u201d Baciocco said. \u201cI think the cold disappeared but the wetness was there throughout. I was okay running through puddles.\u201d<\/p>\n
Baciocco distanced himself entering the forest and pulled away on the first hill.<\/p>\n
At the finish his Wolves teammates followed in his footsteps sweeping the top four slots.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is really fun having them push me,\u201d Baciocco said. \u201cIt is a friendly competition.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wolves flooded over the line as Sitka\u2019s David Wilco, Joseph Pate and Jordan Zellhuber took second through fourth place, and Wrangell\u2019s Matthew Gerald placed fifth.<\/p>\n
JDHS swept both the girls and boys team titles with TMHS placing second for girls and Ketchikan second for boys.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoth our teams had great races today,\u201d JDHS coach Tristan Knutson-Lombardo said. \u201cOur boys showed great strength on their home course. Ethan (Goebel) and Ali (Arthur) continued their leadership up front and Arne (Ellefson-Carnes) had another strong finish. Our remaining pack of four sealed the win. The girls team went in knowing that it was going to be a tight race with Ketchikan and they used their knowledge of the course to their advantage. We couldn\u2019t be more happy for our teams and we\u2019re excited to be taking two full squads to the state tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Falcons Welling and Erin Wallace again led the 4A girls pack.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith Naomi and Erin leading the way, our girls were only 6 points out of first place,\u201d TMHS coach Scott May said. \u201cThis was higher than we had anticipated. We knew it was going to be close with Ketchikan for second, and it was. All three teams had great performances.\u201d<\/p>\n
TMHS senior Dunya Herman surprised the Falcons with a lifetime personal record of 22:10 that qualified for state by placing in the top 10. She joins region winner Welling and runner up Erin Wallace.<\/p>\n
Ketchikan\u2019s Erika Rodanhisler, JDHS\u2019 Malia Miller and Katline Barrows, Ketchikan\u2019s Sarah Cool, JDHS\u2019 Maddy Handley, Ketchikan\u2019s Elizabeth Knight and JDHS\u2019 Toma Kimlinger placed in the top 10. All members of the winning teams go to state as well.<\/p>\n
TMHS qualified three boys for state. The Falcons top finisher Justin Sleppy, Jonah Penrose and Obadiah Dawson made the cut. Others in the top 10 included region winner Arthur, JDHS runner up Ethan Goebel, Ketchikan\u2019s Sylvan Blankenship, JDHS\u2019 Arne Ellefson-Carnes, and Ketchikan\u2019s Leif Svenson, Trent Rodanhisler and Leif Stephens.<\/p>\n
The top three small schools qualify for the state championships along with the top 15 individual placers. <\/p>\n
