OXFORD, Ohio<\/strong> \u2014 Pete Rose said it\u2019s an American tradition to give second chances, although he wouldn\u2019t describe himself as optimistic about his application for reinstatement to Major League Baseball being approved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s the right word,\u201d Rose said Monday in a brief interview between appearances on the campus of Miami University in southwest Ohio. \u201cI think he\u2019s his own man, he\u2019ll make up his own mind. I\u2019m just happy he\u2019s willing to review my status.\u201d<\/p>\n

First-year commissioner Rob Manfred has said he plans to meet with baseball\u2019s banned hit king by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s his timetable. He\u2019s the boss, my phone\u2019s always on,\u201d Rose said. \u201cIf I get that meeting, I\u2019ll look forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interviewed by Miami student TV journalists, Rose said repeatedly that he made mistakes and that he hopes others will learn from them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been suspended a long time, but I made the mistake, and I\u2019m paying the consequences,\u201d Rose added. \u201cIf I\u2019m ever given a second chance, I\u2019ll be the happiest guy in the world. I\u2019m an American. This is America, you get a second chance. … I won\u2019t need a third chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose\u2019s college visit was to be capped by a discussion with Cincinnati Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty about ethics and sports as part of the school\u2019s fall lecture series. Miami spokeswoman Claire Wagner said Rose was paid $30,000 including expenses.<\/p>\n

Rose began the lecture discussion by telling students he had \u201cscrewed up.\u201d He said: \u201cI\u2019m not going to sit here in Oxford, Ohio, and whine about me being suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dubbed \u201cCharlie Hustle\u201d as a Reds rookie in 1963, Rose called himself a hard-working ambassador for the game he loves, which he noted he\u2019s now been suspended from for a third of his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never underestimated how important the fans are,\u201d Rose said. \u201cI never cheated the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cincinnati native, now 74, had 4,256 career hits. He was banned in 1989 for betting on baseball. Between his serious messages, Rose often had the packed house of mostly students roaring at his baseball anecdotes, jokes and one-liners such as saying the Miami football team covered the spread last Saturday and that he was the only person in the audience who would say his favorite position is \u201cfirst base.\u201d<\/p>\n
