{"id":2481,"date":"2016-05-15T08:03:22","date_gmt":"2016-05-15T15:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/greenpeace-files-complaint-against-uw-fishery-scientist\/"},"modified":"2016-05-15T08:03:22","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T15:03:22","slug":"greenpeace-files-complaint-against-uw-fishery-scientist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/greenpeace-files-complaint-against-uw-fishery-scientist\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace files complaint against UW fishery scientist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SEATTLE \u2014 Greenpeace has filed a complaint against a University of Washington fishery scientist, claiming that at times he fails to disclose in articles the industry funding he receives.<\/p>\n<p>A letter sent Wednesday from Greenpeace to university President Ana Mari Cauce details a complaint against Ray Hilborn and asks for an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The Seattle Times reported Hilborn has been critical of Greenpeace and other environmental groups, accusing them of overstating the impacts of fishing on marine resources.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace said Hilborn\u2019s failure to fully disclose ties to industry put at risk scientific knowledge and the university\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Hilborn said he hasn\u2019t felt obligated to disclose industry funding unless it was specifically for research that is the focus of an academic journal article.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the biggest industry funding came from groups in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska for salmon research.
