When<\/span> pilings<\/span> keeping<\/span> wooden docks<\/span> properly<\/span> floating<\/span> are<\/span> no<\/span> longer<\/span> straight,<\/span> it<\/span> can<\/span> become<\/span> a<\/span> problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately,<\/span> the<\/span> City<\/span> and<\/span> Borough<\/span> of<\/span> Juneau<\/span> Docks<\/span> &<\/span> Harbors<\/span> department<\/span> was<\/span> able<\/span> to<\/span> find<\/span> the<\/span> solution<\/span> and<\/span> fix<\/span> that<\/span> particular<\/span> problem<\/span> at<\/span> Taku<\/span> Harbor<\/span> before<\/span> a<\/span> major<\/span> issue<\/span> occurred,<\/span> according<\/span> to<\/span> a<\/span> release<\/span> Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The<\/span> problem<\/span> we<\/span> had<\/span> been<\/span> noting<\/span> is<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> weren’t<\/span> straight<\/span> anymore<\/span> and<\/span> were<\/span> starting<\/span> to<\/span> come<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> ground,”<\/span> Deputy<\/span> Port<\/span> Engineer<\/span> Erich<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said<\/span> in<\/span> a<\/span> phone<\/span> interview<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> Empire<\/span> Tuesday.<\/span> “We<\/span> weren’t<\/span> sure<\/span> what<\/span> was<\/span> going<\/span> on.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> CBJ<\/span> recently<\/span> contracted<\/span> with<\/span> Juneau<\/span> contractor,<\/span> Trucano<\/span> Construction,<\/span> in<\/span> fixing<\/span> the<\/span> problem.<\/span> The<\/span> construction<\/span> company<\/span> extracted,<\/span> drained,<\/span> reinstalled<\/span> and<\/span> capped<\/span> each<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> pilings.<\/span> Previously,<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> did<\/span> not<\/span> have<\/span> caps<\/span> which<\/span> is<\/span> mostly<\/span> what<\/span> caused<\/span> the<\/span> problem,<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schaal<\/span> said<\/span> what<\/span> had<\/span> happened<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> was<\/span> not<\/span> something<\/span> Docks<\/span> &<\/span> Harbors<\/span> sees<\/span> often.<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said<\/span> water<\/span> made<\/span> its<\/span> way<\/span> into<\/span> the<\/span> pilings.<\/span> During<\/span> the<\/span> winter,<\/span> the water,<\/span> which<\/span> could<\/span> not<\/span> be<\/span> drained,<\/span> froze<\/span> and<\/span> expanded.<\/span> This<\/span> expansion<\/span> forced<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> to<\/span> lift<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ice<\/span> is<\/span> powerful,”<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said.<\/span> “It<\/span> is<\/span> pretty<\/span> unique.<\/span> It<\/span> is<\/span> an<\/span> unusual<\/span> situation.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Schaal<\/span> said<\/span> the<\/span> problem<\/span> initially<\/span> made<\/span> the<\/span> dock<\/span> uneven<\/span> and<\/span> having<\/span> pilings<\/span> that<\/span> were<\/span> not<\/span> straight<\/span> also<\/span> looked<\/span> odd.<\/span> However,<\/span> if<\/span> the<\/span> increased<\/span> stress<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> was<\/span> not<\/span> dealt<\/span> with<\/span> it<\/span> would<\/span> eventually<\/span> lead<\/span> to<\/span> safety<\/span> issues<\/span> for<\/span> people<\/span> getting<\/span> in<\/span> or<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> a<\/span> boat<\/span> due<\/span> to<\/span> an<\/span> unbalanced<\/span> and<\/span> moving<\/span> surface.<\/span><\/p>\n

Docks<\/span> &<\/span> Harbors<\/span> was<\/span> able<\/span> to<\/span> work<\/span> with<\/span> Alaska<\/span> Department<\/span> of<\/span> Fish<\/span> &<\/span> Game<\/span> in<\/span> securing<\/span> funding,<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> amount<\/span> of<\/span> $116,000,<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> project<\/span> through<\/span> the<\/span> Federal<\/span> Aid<\/span> in<\/span> Sport<\/span> Fish<\/span> Restoration<\/span> Act.<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span> addition<\/span> to<\/span> fixing<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> coming<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> ground,<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said<\/span> Trucano<\/span> repaired<\/span> several<\/span> hinge<\/span> connections,<\/span> repaired<\/span> a<\/span> split<\/span> piling<\/span> and<\/span> oversaw<\/span> Global<\/span> Diving’s<\/span> installation<\/span> of<\/span> zinc<\/span> anodes.<\/span> The<\/span> zinc<\/span> anodes<\/span> help<\/span> protect<\/span> the<\/span> pilings<\/span> from<\/span> the corrosive<\/span> salt<\/span> water.<\/span> All<\/span> the<\/span> work<\/span>,<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said,<\/span> was<\/span> completed<\/span> in<\/span> nine<\/span> days.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Trucano<\/span> Construction<\/span> did<\/span> a<\/span> great<\/span> job<\/span> and<\/span> showcased<\/span> the<\/span> talented<\/span> professionals<\/span> we<\/span> have<\/span> in<\/span> town,”<\/span> Schaal<\/span> said.<\/span> “It<\/span> also<\/span> did<\/span> not<\/span> impact<\/span> the<\/span> boating<\/span> season.<\/span> Docks<\/span> &<\/span> Harbors<\/span> is<\/span> pleased<\/span> to<\/span> continue<\/span> its<\/span> vision<\/span> to<\/span> improve<\/span> harbor<\/span> infrastructure<\/span> throughout<\/span> the<\/span> borough<\/span> with<\/span> an<\/span> emphasis<\/span> on<\/span> targeted<\/span> maintenance.”<\/span><\/p>\n
