New column: ‘Alaska for Real’

This week we welcome the writer Tara Neilson to the pages of the Capital City Weekly. As you’ll read in her first column, Neilson grew up in a floathouse between Ketchikan and Wrangell, and now she has a floathouse of her own. She lives a very particularly Southeast Alaskan version of bush Alaska. Case in point: most people email me their columns. Tara was having technological troubles (she only got internet a little more than a year ago) and wasn’t able to do that. Instead, she put printed version of her column, along with a few photos, in the once-a-week mail-carrying floatplane. I typed it up and scanned her photos, adding a few more she emailed later on.

Tara’s a great writer, engaging and evocative, and the stories she has to tell are fascinating whether she’s talking about putting herself up against the elements or fixing the floathouse roof (or the two combined.) No matter how it gets to us, I hope you enjoy Tara’s new bimonthly column, “Alaska for Real,” as much as I know I’m going to.
