{"id":26624,"date":"2015-10-26T08:01:49","date_gmt":"2015-10-26T15:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/southeast-residents-protest-ferry-cutbacks\/"},"modified":"2015-10-26T08:01:49","modified_gmt":"2015-10-26T15:01:49","slug":"southeast-residents-protest-ferry-cutbacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/southeast-residents-protest-ferry-cutbacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeast residents protest ferry cutbacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KETCHIKAN \u2014<\/strong> Southeast Alaska residents are worried ferry service will fall next year to what may be the lowest level in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned residents filled the room and overflowed into hallways at Friday\u2019s listening session in the Sitka Legislative Information Office, the Ketchikan Daily News reported.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers made a number of suggestions to raise revenue for the Alaska Marine Highway System, like selling assets and imposing tolls on roads to the north.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Alaska Marine Highway System is basically Alaska\u2019s only toll road. We\u2019re the only ones who actually have to pay a fare to use our roads,\u201d Charles Morgan said in Sitka. \u201c&#8230; Have you looked at putting any kind of a toll on roads up north? How would they like it if the only time they could get was once a week at 3 in the morning on Tuesday, (if) that was their only access to the highway to get from Fairbanks to Anchorage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 draft schedule takes three ferries out of summer service and allows one to sail for 25 days in May.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, D-Sitka, said most speakers expressed support for the ferry system while asking for steady service rather than short bursts during different times of year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most concern and frustration that I\u2019ve ever seen with the ferry system,\u201d he said after the meeting<\/p>\n<p>He said his staff researched records and believes the plan would reduce service in Sitka to the lowest level dating back to at least 1964.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s system-wide problems, of course, but we\u2019re an outlier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KETCHIKAN \u2014 Southeast Alaska residents are worried ferry service will fall next year to what may be the lowest level in decades.
