{"id":26782,"date":"2016-01-18T09:01:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T17:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/colorado-wildfire-team-heads-to-alaska\/"},"modified":"2016-01-18T09:01:37","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T17:01:37","slug":"colorado-wildfire-team-heads-to-alaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/colorado-wildfire-team-heads-to-alaska\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado wildfire team heads to Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DURANGO, Colo. \u2014<\/strong> A team of wildland firefighters is headed from the Durango area to the rugged terrain of Alaska this year because of their reputation as some of the best in the West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDurango people started going up, and they all did a good job \u2014 everyone was impressed \u2014 and if you got a recommendation from a Durango guy, it was a lot easier to get the job,\u201d said Eric Elliott, who at 21 made his first trek to Fairbanks in 2009 to work with the North Star Fire Crew in Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighters from southwestern Colorado said their mountain terrain and healthy lifestyle produces good firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just kind of the Durango culture. Since we were kids, almost everyone I knew was always hiking around, camping and basically firefighting without the fire. We grew up at a high elevation and are pretty active, so it wasn\u2019t a far jump,\u201d Elliott told The Durango Herald.<\/p>\n<p>Bureau of Land Management air tactical supervisor Charlie Brown said there is a network of Durango firefighters who join Alaska fire crews each summer, and they have to prove themselves every time they prepare to head north.<\/p>\n<p>Smokejumpers and hot-shot crews can travel anywhere in the United States, but Alaska crews have higher standards and have a strong firefighting background.<\/p>\n<p>Hot-shot crews have more than 20 firefighters, and the physical training is tough, even for previous team members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt entails stuff like carrying 90 pounds up a ski area, 10-mile runs, and if you can\u2019t hang, they cut you,\u201d said Gavin Stroud, 22.
