{"id":27414,"date":"2015-10-16T21:18:51","date_gmt":"2015-10-17T04:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/interior-department-curbing-future-arctic-offshore-drilling\/"},"modified":"2015-10-16T21:18:51","modified_gmt":"2015-10-17T04:18:51","slug":"interior-department-curbing-future-arctic-offshore-drilling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/interior-department-curbing-future-arctic-offshore-drilling\/","title":{"rendered":"Interior Department curbing future Arctic offshore drilling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANCHORAGE \u2014 <\/strong>The Interior Department says it will not extend Arctic offshore leases held by Royal Dutch Shell and other companies in Arctic waters off Alaska\u2019s northern coast.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Secretary Sally Jewell says she\u2019s also cancelling new lease sales tentatively scheduled for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>The decision significantly reduces the chances for future Arctic offshore drilling.<\/p>\n<p>Shell announced Sept. 28 it would cease exploration in the Chukchi (chuk-CHEE\u2019) and Beaufort seas after spending upward of $7 billion on Arctic exploration.<\/p>\n<p>The company cited disappointing results from a well drilled in the Chukchi and the unpredictable federal regulatory environment.<\/p>\n<p>Federal leases in the Beaufort Sea are due to expire in 2017 and in the Chukchi in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Jewell says that in light of Shell\u2019s announcement, it doesn\u2019t make sense to prepare for lease sales in the Arctic in the next year and a half.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE \u2014 The Interior Department says it will not extend Arctic offshore leases held by Royal Dutch Shell and other companies in Arctic waters off Alaska\u2019s northern coast.
