Channel Construction is planning a new barge landing at its facility on Channel Drive.

On Aug. 5, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the Juneau construction company had applied for permission to build a barge ramp that would allow side-loading barges to operate at its site next to the Douglas Island Pink and Chum salmon hatchery.

A Corps of Engineers permit is required before construction begins on projects that affect the “waters of the United States.”

The company already has a nose-in barge landing on Channel Drive.

“What we’re doing is right now, that facility, you can offload a ramp barge there, but you can’t offload a regular barge off the side of it,” explained Chris Gerondale, the Corps-designated agent for the project. “Channel’s just looking at ways to have their facility more usable to better serve them.”

Construction of the barge ramp would involve depositing about 8,600 cubic yards of clean rock into a space of less than half an acre. Mooring dolphins next to the ramp would involve pile-driving.

Gerondale said no timeline has been set for construction; the Corps of Engineers notice is simply a permit application.
