{"id":27456,"date":"2018-05-15T02:32:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T09:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/pedestrian-struck-killed-by-truck\/"},"modified":"2018-05-15T02:32:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T09:32:00","slug":"pedestrian-struck-killed-by-truck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/pedestrian-struck-killed-by-truck\/","title":{"rendered":"Pedestrian struck, killed by truck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_7NT5QKoKNs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A pickup truck struck and killed a pedestrian near the Brotherhood Bridge on Monday evening, Juneau Police Department officers said at the scene Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The victim was identified as 23-year-old Juneau woman Brittany Nicole Arey, according to JPD Public Safety Manager Erann Kalwara. Next of kin has been notified, Kalwara said.<\/p>\n<p>The crash was reported to police at 5:20 p.m., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juneaupolice.com\/PSA-template.php?UID=1985\" target=\"_blank\">a release <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juneaupolice.com\/PSA-template.php?UID=1985\" target=\"_blank\">from JPD<\/a> said. The vehicle involved was a light blue 1991 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 60-year-old Haines man, the release said, and the truck had a large dent in the hood at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Personnel from Capital City Fire\/Rescue, JPD and the Alaska State Troopers responded to the scene, performing CPR on the woman but she was declared deceased shortly after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>At the scene, Sgt. Sterling Salisbury said a cause of the crash had not yet been determined as of 7:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Salisbury said that based on what the driver and witnesses said to police, the woman appeared to be trying to cross the street. Salisbury said alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The Chevrolet was the only car involved, Salisbury said.<\/p>\n<p>Police were beginning their investigation around 6 p.m., covering her with a yellow tarp and starting to determine what the cause might have been.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Because it&rsquo;s a fatality, we have what we call our Major Accident Reconstruction Team come out and they diagram and investigate the area,&rdquo; JPD Lt. Krag Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ziP6f0NQgtA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Police had Glacier Highway inbound blocked off for more than an hour, and Campbell said they would shortly have traffic reopened on one side of the road with one lane inbound and one lane outbound. As of 7:45 p.m., the inbound lanes were still closed and Salisbury said he expected them to be closed for another hour or two.<\/p>\n<p>There was speculation on social media about the victim being on a skateboard when hit.
