{"id":28996,"date":"2016-10-21T08:05:12","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T15:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/police-chief-reinstated-in-wake-of-shooting\/"},"modified":"2016-10-21T08:05:12","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T15:05:12","slug":"police-chief-reinstated-in-wake-of-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/police-chief-reinstated-in-wake-of-shooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Police chief reinstated in wake of shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>JUNEAU<\/strong> \u2014 Fairbanks Mayor John Eberhart has reinstated the city\u2019s police chief, one month after he was placed on leave pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations of possible conflict-of-interest violations.<\/p>\n<p>Eberhart announced Wednesday that Chief Randall Aragon would return to work immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes in the wake of the shooting of police Sgt. Allen Brandt by a 29-year-old suspect.<\/p>\n<p>Eberhart cited the need for leadership following the Sunday shooting that left Brandt seriously wounded. Other reasons for Aragon\u2019s reinstatement include short staffing and that officials haven\u2019t yet found any wrongdoing to warrant disciplinary action against Aragon.<\/p>\n<p>The chief was placed on administrative leave Sept. 22 after former police Chief Dan Hoffman called for the investigation in a letter to the Fairbanks City Council. Hoffman said he received a report from a business owner of \u201cunethical activity\u201d by Aragon.<\/p>\n<p>The letter contends Aragon told the business owner that police could only do a brief assessment of her business after she reported property crime concerns. Aragon, listed as the sole proprietor of Certified Security Surveys, then allegedly offered to do a \u201cmore thorough job\u201d himself for a fee.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the investigation results in corrective or disciplinary action, returning Chief Aragon to work does not change that possible action,\u201d Eberhart said in a statement. \u201cIt is important to minimize any possible liability of the City since it is premature to assume that there was wrongdoing, contrary to some statements made in public.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JUNEAU \u2014 Fairbanks Mayor John Eberhart has reinstated the city\u2019s police chief, one month after he was placed on leave pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations of possible conflict-of-interest violations.
