{"id":29435,"date":"2017-01-08T09:01:31","date_gmt":"2017-01-08T17:01:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/fairbanks-teen-helps-stuck-drivers-through-facebook\/"},"modified":"2017-01-08T09:01:31","modified_gmt":"2017-01-08T17:01:31","slug":"fairbanks-teen-helps-stuck-drivers-through-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fairbanks-teen-helps-stuck-drivers-through-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Fairbanks teen helps stuck drivers through Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FAIRBANKS \u2014 <\/strong>A Facebook page started by a teenage girl in Fairbanks is connecting stranded drivers to a group of volunteers who will help pull their vehicle out of a ditch at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>The page, called \u201cFairbanks I\u2019m Stuck Come Pull Me Out,\u201d was started last year by 17-year-old Megyn Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Williams said the page, which has more than 1,500 members, was initially intended for drivers who like to go off-road and find themselves stuck in muddy terrain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been stuck before and I noticed there was no group for people who were stuck. I thought, \u2018Maybe I can create a page for that,\u2019\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>With recent winter weather, the group of about 30 volunteers has been helping rescue vehicles stuck in the snow, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.<\/p>\n<p>A snowstorm hit Fairbanks this past week, and the volunteer rescuers have been so busy they\u2019ve stopped keeping track of how many vehicles they pulled out of ditches.<\/p>\n<p>A look on the group\u2019s Facebook page reveals several images of vehicles in ditches and posts from rescued drivers saying thanks.<\/p>\n<p>Williams said she\u2019s trying to raise funds for extra equipment, such as flares, emergency lighting and reflective vests, so the group can continue helping motorists. She has started a GoFundMe page, called \u201cFairbanks I\u2019m Stuck Equipment Fund,\u201d to support the effort.<\/p>\n<p>The group is planning a Feb. 12 meeting for people who want to meet other members or join the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never imagined this group would grow like it did,\u201d Williams said. \u201cI just want to give a sincere thank-you to everyone for being a part of the group and for the members who have donated so much of their time and energy to helping our community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRBANKS \u2014 A Facebook page started by a teenage girl in Fairbanks is connecting stranded drivers to a group of volunteers who will help pull their vehicle out of a ditch at no cost.
