After 11 years of buying, selling and trading second-hand sports gear and fitness equipment, Juneau\u2019s first and only Play It Again Sports is going out of business \u2014 unless the owner can find a buyer willing to take it over.<\/p>\n
Rusty Scudder placed a \u201cGoing Out of Business\u201d banner on the store\u2019s window on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great business, but I\u2019ve been trying to sell it and no one\u2019s buying,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Scudder said he\u2019s been commuting back and forth from Juneau to Cape Cod, Massachusetts this past year to care for his ailing mother. He listed the business up for sale in the spring.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought it would sell fairly fast \u2014 it\u2019s a good business, always has been,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just gotten to the point where I can\u2019t wait anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scudder declined to say how much he was selling it for. Several people expressed interest, but no one has bit so far, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m bummed for a lot of reasons,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m bummed for the town. Lots and lots and lots of people come in all the time and say, \u2018We\u2019re so happy you\u2019re here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he can\u2019t help but be \u201cpessimistically hopeful\u201d for a last-minute buy. It\u2019s a turn-key operation, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomeone could walk in here tomorrow, and get the keys tomorrow,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cThe owner is ready to make a screaming deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scudder opened the store in 2004 because as a father with two young kids, it was tough to afford outfitting them with the gear they needed for each sport they played, especially as they outgrew it every year. A state worker at the time, he had never heard of the used sporting good franchise until a trip to Anchorage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ran into this store, and I was like, \u2018Oh man, this is exactly what we need in Juneau,\u2019\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n
Unless Scudder can find a buyer, Play It Again Sports\u2019 last day is slated for Dec. 31.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s only one other used sporting good store in Juneau \u2014 Second Wind Sports, which opened up a few years ago.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, Scudder is hosting the going out of business sale. Some of the items are marked down 50 to 75 percent, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re trying to sell everything, and we\u2019re making some great deals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
