The Thunder Mountain High School volleyball team took to the courts in Sitka over the weekend and Juneau-Douglas traveled farther north for the West Spiketacular in Anchorage.

“This weekend over all we did alright,” Thunder Mountain coach Arnold Ibias said. “A lot to still work on.”

According to Ibias, the team came together in Friday’s win over Sitka for a 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 victory after falling to Mt. Edgecumbe on Thursday 25-19, 25-22.

“We won against Sitka because we came together on our defense and offense,” Ibias said. “We made great passes and great hits, that is what kept us in the game. Our defense on Friday wasn’t all there against Sitka or Mt. Edgecumbe, it could have been better. Maxie Saceda-Hurt and Maya Haywood really stepped up with their hitting from the middle block. Our defense was up and down all weekend but we are starting to put together runs for points by being a little more aggressive at the net.”

On Saturday, the Falcons lost to Mt. Edgecumbe 25-21, 29-25 and topped Sitka 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-9.

“We became a hitting team that worked together and ultimately came out on top with a win to end our last game of the weekend,” Tracy Bourassa said.

“It was really good,” Marissa Tanuvasa-Tuvaifale said. “I think we played good against Sitka. I think we should have played like that against Mt. Edgecumbe but the whole week turned out pretty good. I had so much fun and we played our hardest.”

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears traveled to Anchorage for the West Spiketacular Tournament.

The Crimson Bears had a record of 6-6 in the round robin portion and finished 11th out of 21 teams.

This placed JDHS in the Silver Bracket where they took third place. The Crimson Bears beat Kenai 25-22, 21-25, 16-14 and were defeated by East Anchorage 19-25, 16-25. Ketchikan went 2-10 in round robin and placed 19th, tying for third in the bronze division.

East Anchorage won the Silver Bracket over Soldotna 25-20, 25-18 and Valdez topped Service for the Bronze Bracket title 25-12, 21-25, 25-13.
