Despite<\/span> some state-level<\/span> financial<\/span> help<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> Juneau<\/span> School<\/span> District<\/span> is letting go of<\/span> 10<\/span> elementary<\/span> school<\/span> teachers<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> upcoming<\/span> school<\/span> year.<\/span><\/p>\n District<\/span> Superintendent<\/span> Mark<\/span> Miller<\/span> said<\/span> there<\/span> were<\/span> multiple<\/span> factors<\/span> that<\/span> played<\/span> into<\/span> the<\/span> cuts, which were a part of the $3.5 million total cuts from the Fiscal Year 2019 budget.<\/span><\/p>\n “We<\/span> ran<\/span> out<\/span> of<\/span> money,<\/span> is<\/span> the<\/span> long<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> short<\/span> of<\/span> it,”<\/span> Miller<\/span> said<\/span> in<\/span> a<\/span> phone<\/span> interview<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> Empire<\/span> Wednesday.<\/span> “We<\/span> did<\/span> not<\/span> get<\/span> quite<\/span> what<\/span> we<\/span> were<\/span> hoping<\/span> for<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> state,<\/span> plus<\/span> we<\/span> lost<\/span> 54<\/span> students.”<\/span><\/p>\n [School district budget cut another $3.5M<\/a>]<\/span><\/ins><\/p>\n A drop in student enrollment also lowers funding from base<\/span> student<\/span> allocations, which is <\/span>the amount of money funded from the state per full-time student at a school. For its FY 2019 budget, the district<\/span> had<\/span> planned<\/span> to<\/span> receive<\/span> $100<\/span> more<\/span> in<\/span> BSA<\/span> than<\/span> last<\/span> year’s<\/span> amount<\/span> of<\/span> $5,930<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> However,<\/span> the district received less<\/span> than<\/span> expected from the Legislature during the legislative session this year.<\/span><\/p>\n
