{"id":29694,"date":"2016-07-28T21:05:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T04:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/blm-finalizes-transfer-of-st-lawrence-island-to-village-corporations\/"},"modified":"2016-07-28T21:05:09","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T04:05:09","slug":"blm-finalizes-transfer-of-st-lawrence-island-to-village-corporations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/blm-finalizes-transfer-of-st-lawrence-island-to-village-corporations\/","title":{"rendered":"BLM finalizes transfer of St. Lawrence Island to village corporations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Land Management has officially signed over almost the entire landmass of St. Lawrence Island to two village corporations on the island.<\/p>\n<p>St. Lawrence Island, at 1 million acres, is the sixth-largest island in the United States and has been in the process of transfer since 1979, when the federal government issued a declaration of \u201cinterim conveyance\u201d to Kukulget Inc. of Savoonga and Sivuqaq Inc. of Gambell.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration was made possible by the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, but it was \u201cinterim\u201d until the federal government completed a complete land survey. With that survey finalized, BLM Director Neil Kornze on Wednesday signed a patent to finalize the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of St. Lawrence Island have been seeking formal title to their lands for decades,\u201d Kornze said in a prepared statement. \u201cI am honored to be here to help bring this long journey to a positive end.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Land Management has officially signed over almost the entire landmass of St. Lawrence Island to two village corporations on the island.
