The public is invited to the first day of a design competition for the Willoughby Arts Complex. Juneau-based architectural firms Jensen, Yorba, Lott; MRV and Northwind will describe their experience and present examples of their work at a forum from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, at KTOO 360 North.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the first step in our design competition,\u201d said Willoughby Arts Complex project manager Katharine Heumann. \u201cWe\u2019re hoping people will come. We really want this whole process, including choosing an architect \u2014 and once the architect starts designing something \u2014 to include the public.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the public session, during which people can fill out comment cards and ask questions, the process will continue.<\/p>\n
They expect to have chosen the architect by the end of the month.<\/p>\n
The JAHC is also asking for name suggestions for the building, Heumann said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat will be an interactive process in itself. We\u2019d love to hear what people suggest for that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
According to the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, the Complex will be a modern and inviting community arts hub, incorporating a renovation of the existing Juneau Arts and Culture Center, with an extension towards Centennial Hall.<\/p>\n
The completed Arts Complex is projected to provide theater and gallery spaces, meeting rooms, classrooms, offices for arts and cultural groups, a caf\u00e9, an artisan gift shop, and renovations to the existing Juneau Arts & Culture Center.<\/p>\n
