{"id":31851,"date":"2015-09-18T19:51:34","date_gmt":"2015-09-19T02:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/agency-investigates-deaths-of-25-walrus-on-alaska-coast\/"},"modified":"2015-09-18T19:51:34","modified_gmt":"2015-09-19T02:51:34","slug":"agency-investigates-deaths-of-25-walrus-on-alaska-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/agency-investigates-deaths-of-25-walrus-on-alaska-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Agency investigates deaths of 25 walrus on Alaska coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANCHORAGE \u2014<\/strong> A federal agency is investigating the deaths of 25 walrus found on a northwest Alaska beach.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman Andrea Medeiros says a cause of death has not been determined for the animals found near Cape Lisburne.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve of the dead animals were young pups, and some were missing their heads and tusks.<\/p>\n<p>The carcasses were photographed by a person who works at an Air Force radar station at the cape, a barren, isolated spot about 230 miles northeast of the Bering Strait.<\/p>\n<p>The report came in Wednesday but inclement weather kept agency personnel from reaching the site until Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Medeiros says investigators do not reach conclusions regarding animals deaths based only on reports from the public.<\/p>\n<p>She says the walrus could have died in the Chukchi Sea and washed up on shore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE \u2014 A federal agency is investigating the deaths of 25 walrus found on a northwest Alaska beach.
