{"id":32724,"date":"2016-09-28T02:18:06","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T09:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/kotzebue-jury-convicts-village-man-of-murder-assaults\/"},"modified":"2016-09-28T02:18:06","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T09:18:06","slug":"kotzebue-jury-convicts-village-man-of-murder-assaults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/kotzebue-jury-convicts-village-man-of-murder-assaults\/","title":{"rendered":"Kotzebue jury convicts village man of murder, assaults"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KOTZEBUE \u2014 A 40-year-old northwest Alaska man was convicted Monday of first-degree murder at a trial in Kotzebue.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska State Troopers said Christopher Cleveland of Selawik also was convicted of attempted murder, felony assault, burglary, weapons misconduct, furnishing alcohol to a minor and illegally selling alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Selawik is a village of nearly 900 about 90 miles east of Kotzebue.<\/p>\n<p>Troopers early on July 6, 2015, took a call of a man in the village firing a gun.<\/p>\n<p>A village police officer reported the shooter had barricaded himself in a home and that a man outside had been shot and killed.<\/p>\n<p>Cleveland surrendered 10 hours later.<\/p>\n<p>He was convicted of killing 23-year-old Wade Cleveland and firing at a village police officer and others during the standoff.<\/p>\n<p>Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 11.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KOTZEBUE \u2014 A 40-year-old northwest Alaska man was convicted Monday of first-degree murder at a trial in Kotzebue.
