{"id":33287,"date":"2016-03-18T08:03:59","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T15:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/fairbanks-pot-business-one-step-closer-to-opening\/"},"modified":"2016-03-18T08:03:59","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T15:03:59","slug":"fairbanks-pot-business-one-step-closer-to-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fairbanks-pot-business-one-step-closer-to-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Fairbanks pot business one step closer to opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FAIRBANKS \u2014<\/strong> Fairbanks North Star Borough officials have voted to approve the borough\u2019s first conditional use permit for a marijuana business, paving the way for a pot farm to set up shop in Salcha.<\/p>\n<p>The Planning Commission\u2019s decision Tuesday came despite complaints from neighbors about traffic, odor, safety and noise, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.<\/p>\n<p>Frosty Farms, owned by Travis Christensen and Girard Gaul, will provide marijuana to retailers. Plans for the 2\u00bd-acre property include seven greenhouses and a warehouse for indoor pot growing. The area will be surrounded by a vegetated 50-foot buffer and a 6-foot fence.<\/p>\n<p>The owners, who still must acquire a state license, said the business will help improve the neighborhood by clearing out the trash and abandoned buildings on the property.<\/p>\n<p>But Jim Ostlind said he\u2019s worried the proposed marijuana farm will draw too much attention and could bring thieves into the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a high-value product, and it\u2019s very attractive to certain people,\u201d Ostlind said.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Sean Reilly, the only member of the commission to vote against the pot business, also told Christensen and Gaul that he was worried about the health and welfare of the farm\u2019s neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nothing against your spirit and your entrepreneurial desire,\u201d Reilly said. \u201cI do not believe that this is a proper location for this cultivation facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The neighborhood is described as a mixture of vacant and residential properties, according to a report submitted to the commission.
