The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Juneau will \u201cPaint the Mendenhall Mall Purple\u201d on April 23 and 24. The group said its mission is for people to see purple and think about celebrating, remembering and fighting back against cancer.<\/p>\n
Several Juneau Relay teams will be fundraising with arts and crafts, baked goods and offering luminaria to purchase and decorate in honor or in memory of those affected by cancer. Special promotions and incentives will be offered to current and new teams and participants who sign up. There will also be an area during the weekend offering items free of charge to cancer survivors and caregivers.<\/p>\n
The following stores in the Mendenhall Mall are helping fundraise the entire month of April by selling purple moons and stars, collecting donations and displaying information about Juneau Relay: Asiana Convenience Store, Fashionista, H&R Block, Nugget Alaskan Outfitters, Salon 2211, Verizon GoWireless and What A Foot.<\/p>\n
The Paint the Mall Purple weekend will also serve as Juneau Relay\u2019s kick-off event. The kick-off will help set the tone for this year\u2019s Relay for Life celebration, which is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. on June 3 to noon on June 4 at Riverbend Elementary School. Individuals and teams \u2013 made up of family, friends, co-workers and community groups will unite to fundraise, walk the track, socialize, take in the entertainment and participate in a variety of summer time activities going on through the night and morning.<\/p>\n
Relay for Life is the largest, worldwide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Funds raised are used to provide free local services and fund research for all types of cancer. Relay is the celebration of survivors and caregivers the group\u2019s year-long fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n
Relay is also the world\u2019s largest support group for survivors and caregivers. All local survivors and caregivers are invited to be a part of the Relay celebration where they will be honored with commemorative momentos, special laps, dinner (prepared by Randy\u2019s Rib Shack), waffle breakfast (prepared by chef Felipe and culinary arts students) and other activities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
