Crimson Bears hockey took a loss to visiting Dimond High School junior varsity on Saturday, marking their second of the weekend.<\/p>\n
Juneau-Douglas High School fell 1-5 on their quest to sharpen their game against Anchorage competition in the build up to Mid Alaska Conference competition. Though JDHS failed to score in the second and third periods, assistant coach Matt Boline said the lack of scoring in the latter stages evidenced a bearing down by both defenses, not a failure by JDHS\u2019 offense.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe score was not as good as Friday, but I think it was a better game overall,\u201d Boline said. \u201cEach period we played stronger than the last.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lynx scored three in the first period before JDHS was able to answer. With assists by Joseph Monsef and Cameron Smith, sophomore forward Bill Boss\u00e9 recorded JDHS\u2019 lone goal with 19 seconds to go in the first period.<\/p>\n
Boss\u00e9 \u2014 JDHS\u2019 player of the game \u2014 said Dimond capitalized on JDHS not clearing the puck out of their defensive zone. But after the first period, the team improved by pressuring with their forecheck and keeping the puck out of their zone to begin with.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe weren\u2019t passing that well, and when it was in our zone, we wouldn\u2019t get it out. They got at least three or four goals on us by that,\u201d Boss\u00e9 said. \u201c… After the first period, we got our 1-2-2 forecheck down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dimond scored at 5:38, 1:29 and 1:23 in the first period, then added two more in the second. The scoresheet remained clean in the third, allowing the Lynx to close out at 1-5.<\/p>\n
Dimond brought 19 of their 30-man roster down for the game. The Lynx like to challenge varsity squads with their underclassmen; they even won a varsity tournament last year in Homer.<\/p>\n
This was their program\u2019s first trip to Juneau. Coach Adam Shaw said Juneau had been great to the squad and they\u2019ll definitely be back soon.<\/p>\n
\u201cJuneau has been great to us this trip, I\u2019d like to see a tournament down here at some point, though I know that would be hard to do,\u201d said Shaw, who played hockey at Dimond before Juneau had a hockey program. \u201cI\u2019m glad we were invited. When people ask us about it back home, I definitely going to be telling people we had a great experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
JDHS varsity (2-6) will travel to face North Pole (2-6) on Wednesday and Thursday for their first conference matches of the season. They will move right into two more conference games against West Valley (1-1) on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n
