The 2016 Alaska Positive juror, Larry McNeil, will give a lecture at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 at the the Alaska State Museum.<\/p>\n
Now in its 46th year, Alaska Positive is a biennial exhibition of Alaska photography sponsored by the Alaska State Museum. The 2016 exhibits opens Nov. 4 in Juneau with a statewide tour to follows.<\/p>\n
McNeil is from the Dakl\u2019aweidi K\u00e9et Gooshi H\u00edt, Killer Whale Fin House in Klukwan but his career has taken him many places including San Francisco, Santa Fe and currently Idaho, where he is professor of photography at Boise State University.<\/p>\n
According to a press release, McNeil \u201cstarted his career as an artist with a photo degree, an old beat up Ford, a couple boxes in the back seat, and some brassy Nikon cameras. He knew instinctively that what he sought couldn\u2019t be found in a studio; this called for a journey to find what America was all about.<\/p>\n
\u201cMcNeil\u2019s art is about the intersection of cultures, American mythology, irony, and satire, and embodies a distinctive sense of American identity.<\/p>\n
He has won numerous fellowships and awards for his work, including the Van Deren Coke Fellowship from the University of New Mexico, Eiteljorg Fellowship, an Arts and Humanities Fellowship as well as awards from the National Geographic All Roads Program and a New Works Award from En Foco.<\/p>\n
