On Oct. 13, 1986, southcentral Alaska was hit hard by a heavy storm. Several homes were damaged, and roads in Seward were destroyed. Although the storm was still ongoing, most of the floodwater had receded and the rain wasn\u2019t as heavy.<\/p>\n
During the 34th annual convention of the Alaska Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers in Juneau, the president of the Independent Insurance Agents of America warned Alaskan municipalities and school districts that opt to insure themselves may be putting local taxpayers at risk. He said that self-insuring towns to cut costs may only help in the short-term, but risk the long-term financial stability of the tow.<\/p>\n
Although the local elections were complete, the gubernatorial and statewide race was still picking up speed with one more month until the election. Arliss Sturgulewski, the Republican candidate for governor, talked about her opponent Steve Cowper\u2019s weak stance on resource development and economic improvement. Both candidates have said they support exploration and development of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n
